This journey includes stays in three distinctive properties that reflect the character of Puglia and Basilicata. Begin in a boutique hotel in the historic center of Lecce, spend a night in Matera’s remarkable Sassi district in a cave hotel, then settle into a historic masseria surrounded by ancient olive groves in the heart of Puglia’s Itria Valley. Each accommodation has been chosen for its sense of place, comfort and connection to the region.

Explore Baroque Lecce, Alberobello's iconic trulli, the whitewashed streets of Ostuni, and the ancient stone city of Matera.
Spend a night in Matera's UNESCO-listed Sassi district, staying in a hotel built into the city's ancient caves.
Learn to make orecchiette with our friend Gianna in Lecce and focaccia, taralli, and fresh mozzarella at our masseria.

Thursday, April 29, 2027Arrival in Lecce
Today is your arrival day at our beautiful boutique hotel in the historic center of Lecce. You’ll have free time to relax, explore the city’s artisan boutiques, or settle into a local café before we gather for “apericena” at one of our favorite enoteche. Apericena is the Italian word for a light dinner, but in Puglia, the term ‘light’ should be taken with a grain of salt. Lecce’s honey-colored Baroque architecture and relaxed pace make it the perfect place to begin our journey.

Friday, April 30, 2027Lecce Artisans & Cooking class with Gianna
This morning we’ll visit a local papier-mâché workshop where centuries-old techniques are still practiced today. You’ll then have free time to wander Lecce’s historic center, visit museums, shop, or enjoy lunch on your own.
In the late afternoon, we’ll join our friend Gianna for a hands-on cooking class featuring orecchiette, Puglia’s most famous pasta. After preparing dinner together, we’ll sit down to enjoy the fruits of our labor before a leisurely stroll back to our hotel.

Saturday, May 1, 2027Grottaglie Ceramics & The Sassi of Matera
Today we’ll depart Lecce and stop in Grottaglie, a town famous for its ceramics. We’ll visit our friend Cosimo, a local artisan who will share the remarkable story behind his unique home and collection. After free time and lunch and browsing the town’s many workshops, we’ll continue to Matera in the neighboring region of Basilicata.
Tonight we’ll stay in the Sassi district, the ancient cave dwellings that have earned Matera UNESCO World Heritage status. After checking into our hotel, we’ll enjoy an evening tour with our friend, Alessio followed by dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants.

Sunday, May 2, 2027Matera & The Itria Valley
Enjoy a relaxed morning in Matera with time to wander, shop, or learn more about the fascinating history of the Sassi. After lunch on your own, we’ll depart for our beautiful masseria in the Itria Valley.
Surrounded by ancient olive groves and gardens, this historic manor farm will be our home for the next five nights. From here we’ll explore some of Puglia’s most iconic towns, landscapes, and traditions. This evening we’ll settle in with dinner beneath a vine-covered pergola.

Monday, May 3, 2027Alberobello Our Way
Today we’ll visit Alberobello, home to Puglia’s iconic trulli and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the town has become one of the region’s most popular destinations, we’ll experience it through the eyes of our friend Mimmo, a local guide and enoteca owner who grew up among the trulli. He’ll introduce us to hidden corners and stories that most visitors never discover.
After our tour, we’ll enjoy a private lunch in the garden of one of Mimmo’s family trulli, prepared by his mother and aunt. You’ll also have free time to browse local boutiques before returning to the masseria for an afternoon at leisure and dinner.

Tuesday, May 4, 2027Polignano a Mare
Today we’ll visit Polignano a Mare, one of Puglia’s most dramatic seaside towns. Perched atop limestone cliffs overlooking the Adriatic, it’s known for its stunning views, sea caves, and crystal-clear waters.
We’ll take a boat excursion beneath the town to explore the caves carved into the coastline, with an opportunity to swim for those who wish. Afterward, you’ll have free time to enjoy lunch, stroll through the historic center, browse the shops, or simply take in the views before returning to the masseria for a relaxing afternoon and dinner.

Wednesday, May 5, 2027Ostuni + Ancient Olive Groves
This morning we’ll explore Ostuni, the famed White City. Wander its winding streets, browse artisan shops, stop for a coffee, or simply enjoy the sweeping views of olive groves stretching toward the Adriatic Sea.
Later we’ll visit our friends Corrado and Antonella at their masseria, where we’ll learn about Puglia’s ancient olive trees and the art of tasting olive oil. Antonella will prepare a homemade lunch featuring local specialties before we return to the masseria for free time and dinner.

Thursday, May 6, 2027Cheesemaking, Cooking, and Relaxing
After breakfast we’ll enjoy a hands-on focaccia and taralli-making class at the masseria. We’ll also be joined by a local cheesemaker who will demonstrate the art of making fresh mozzarella and share the traditions behind one of Puglia’s most beloved foods.
After a light lunch featuring what we’ve prepared together, you’ll have the afternoon free to relax and enjoy the masseria before our farewell dinner.

Our Puglia tour uses charming historic properties with a mix of rooms that are all unique and may vary in size and amenities. Rooms are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis according to need (doubles vs twin beds vs single supplement). Single supplement rooms are limited. Please let us know if you need twin beds.

Physical requirements of this tour

Walking unassisted at a relaxed pace on uneven pavements, hills, and stone stairs, and standing for up to 1–2 hours during walking tours with only short breaks and limited seating available
Negotiating stone stairs to access some hotel rooms without elevators (porters will assist with luggage)

All deposits and final payments are non-refundable. We strongly encourage guests to purchase travel insurance to protect against unexpected cancellations, interruptions, or other unforeseen events. For your convenience, we offer travel protection through Travelex Insurance Services.

This tour begins in the late afternoon (around 5:30 PM) on April 29 and ends on the evening of May 6. Plan your arrival flight for no later than the morning of April 29. Plan your departure flight for the morning of May 7.

We operate the tour for a minimum of 8 guests and a maximum of 14 guests.

The tour includes a daily breakfast buffet at the hotel, 4 lunches, and 7 dinners. There is plenty of food. Lunches and dinners all include wine. Past guests have said it’s too much food. Luckily my Italian grandmother won’t be on the tour to force feed you.
